SGS-LTER Field Station Facilities and the SGS Research and Interpretation Center

The Shortgrass Steppe Research and Interpretation Center , the new multi-institutional field station for research, education and natural resource interpretation of the shortgrass steppe ecosystem, is located on the CPER, approximately ( 7 miles or 13 km north of Nunn, Colorado, along US Highway 85, east on Weld County Road 114. The SGS-RIC has spaces useful to a broad range of visitors. Typical users attend day-long to week-long workshops, conferences, retreats, and are grassland researchers that work over longer stays. Others have been writers in residence, students enrolled field courses and groups of naturalists observing bird migrations, including rare and threatened species such as mountain plover and burrowing owl.

Meeting facilities at the SGS-RIC include a premier classroom/conference room for up to 100 visitors, two smaller meeting rooms for about 10 to 15, and a small catering kitchen. The SGS-RIC cannot provide food service, but caterers from Fort Collins, Greeley and Cheyenne serve the location.

Lodging for up to 30 overnight visitors is in three spacious houses, each sleeping 10 in double occupancy bedrooms. Each house includes a full kitchen, washer/dryer, common spaces for relaxation and/or smaller meetings, and a large porch with views of the grasslands and front range.

The site has access to high-speed internet and wireless connections throughout.

Within walking distance of the new field station are the original US/International Biome Project headquarters originally built to support research conducted in the 1970s for the grassland biome and supports research activities for the LTER program. These facilities include a multipurpose building with offices, laboratory and storage space, and a workshop and garage for heavy equipment and a location for washing, drying, processing and storing samples.
