Instructions for Collection of metadata for all sgs projects:

The following forms should be completed:

· at the time of an “update” interview with principal investigators of long-term SGS projects

OR

· during the initiation of a new research project by an SGS researcher, visiting scientist, or graduate student.

OR

· when a graduate student or researcher contributes data/information to the SGS-LTER database and has not documented the metadata.

The following is a summary of the four types of requested information (click on the title to download the form as a word document):

1. Personnel and contact information includes contact information and your role in the project.

2. Project level information includes the tentative time scale, objectives, and special considerations.

3. Field and lab level information includes information on data collection and sample processing protocols in the field and lab.  It also requests needed equipment, facilities, and person hours to conduct sampling and perform clean-up.

4. Data entry and database level information includes a plan for data entry and management of data sets.  It also provides information to help the researcher define the attributes in the database and includes more specific information on analytical tools used to summarize the data.  Researchers should also document more specific information regarding information about the data set and attributes within the table(s).

5. Dataset and table information one way to clearly document the attributes in your dataset.

6. Excel document another way to clearly document the attributes in your dataset.
